My Volunteering Stint @ The Blood Donation Drive

Last Friday, i volunteered at the public blood drive organized by my company. I had to report for duty at 2pm, so i had lunch first before i went.

I met up with Dennis, who had offered to give me a birthday lunch treat at Akashi - my favourite Japanese restaurant in Vivocity. He was 20 mins late, so we didn't have much time to talk in the end. I had my favourite Tempura Cha Soba, and Dennis ordered some grilled cod fish, which was nice, and this scallop with fish roe and wasabi sauce that was totally Yummy!!

After lunch, i went to the Harbourfront Shopping Center to report for duty and collect my tee-shirt. The organizers had missed out my application form, so they did not allocate a tee-shirt for me. I was quite upset, cause i had submitted the form immediately after i received it, and the person whom i sent to apparently didn't forward it. Anyway, i thought the blood drive was at the same location as the previous year, but when i reached the main square of the shopping center, there was nothing and nobody there. So then i went back to the office to look for my colleague who had also signed up as a volunteer, and look for a tee shirt. Eventually, i got myself a Medium size tee shirt that was obviously too big for me. I looked quite silly in it, but what the heck, it's all for a good cause! = )

Apparently, this year the drive is inside Harbourfront MRT station itself. I was assigned to serve refreshments and distribute feedback forms for 4 hours from 2-6pm. It was no joke. Tiring but nonetheless fun.. i talked to the donors, made some new friends, add a few packets of chocolates (supposed to be for the donors)...

There was a Standard Chartered booth set up opposite us, and the sales people there tried to barter trade with us: If they donate their blood, we sign up credit cards with them. So funny.. In the end, a few of them really came over to donate their blood, and a few of us signed credit cards with them.. I didn't though, cause i wasn't comfortable with this kind of barter trade. To me, the donation of blood should be unconditional.. = )

Here are some pictures i took of the blood drive. We even hired a deejay to spin some music in the MRT station to attract the crowds, and we also had a "Blood Drop" Mascot to go around dancing with a few others lobbying for donors and distributing free tissue packs and red balloons.. It was definitely not an easy task lobbying under the sun, and also the poor mascot, who are my colleagues Dawn and Eleanor, had a tough time dancing for 2 straight hours inside the stuff mascot costume. When they came back for their break and took off their mascot's "head", they were all wet from perspiration!

You'll be surprised at the types of people who are willing to step forward to donate their blood. People from all ages and all races. 2 of my colleagues from the same department came to donate. But one was rejected because the nurse couldn't find her veins to draw the blood. She was totally disappointed cause she had been all hyped up the whole morning for this. She ended up at the refreshment area eating chocolates and raisins and chit chatting with me. = P

I kept getting asked why i didn't donate my blood.. so i just told them i didn't dare to. I wasn't going to say that i had a tattoo, or that i might be pregnant! = )
Anyways, i knocked off from my shift at 6pm sharp. Went back to the office, changed, and cleared some emails.. If you asked, me i will volunteer again next year. And perhaps even donate my blood!

I rushed off for my facial at Roxy Square after clearing my emails. Supposed to do my IPL session that day, but my beautician saw me and nearly fainted cause my skin condition had gotten worse. So she advised me to do extraction and postpone my IPL to another day. During my facial, she advised me to change my diet, stop picking my pimples blah blah.. SIGH.. = (

After my facial, i resolved to exercise more and eat only healthy food starting from Monday. In fact, i was going to sign up for a $38 two-week gym membership at Sky Fitness so i can go there during lunch every day, and eat only fruits and soupy stuff like fish porridge and fishball noodles for lunch. 2 weeks was my target. Since i will be flying off to Perth 2 weeks from now. This will also help me to loose weight before i put on again during my trip!! Let's see whether my plan works..
