Dim Sum Dollies !

K and I drove up to Auckland's Sky City for Dim Sum buffet yesterday. We skipped lunch to save our stomach for the buffet. = )

On the way there, K decided to stop over at the Otara weekend markets to see if he
could get himself a cheap hoodie at one of the shops. He's finally beginning to feel the cold now!! As we shopped around, we came across a chinese bakery with a really long queue. So we popped in and saw that there were lots of delicious looking breads and cakes and muffins going for dirt cheap. I saw some familiar buns sold in packs of 6.. that felt so nostalgic!! K popped into one shop and saw this hoodie that was selling at $15, but it was those slip on types, and he couldn't even get his head in the L size, so we forgot about it. Figured we would be better off getting him the hoodies with the front zippers instead. haha.. that was quite funny!!

We reached Ming Court for the dim sum around 1230pm as per our reservation. It was sit down buffet with only the dessert section on display along the sides of the restaurant. The wait staff would push trolleys of dim sum out and then you pick and choose. We had Chee Cheong Fun, BBQ pork buns, Siew Mai, Har Kow, fishballs, spring rolls, the usual Dim Sum stuff. There was also fried noodles and rice etc. But i would only give my whole gastronomic experience a 6 out of 10. Well, i guess after tasting the authentic Dim Sum in Hong Kong, this one was lousy! To give it some credit, i must say the BBQ pork buns were not bad, and their fruits were really sweet. They also had some nice chocolate cake and red bean sesame balls for dessert.

After lunch, we headed into the casino and K tried his luck at Big Small. He played for about 30 minutes while i watched a netball game on the projector screen. Netball is such a big thing here in New Zealand. It's like the national sport second to Rugby! When we were in Auckland, there is this netball center that seems to be crowded with girls of all ages every evening, despite the freezing weather.. and the number of cars parked outside was just overwhelming!

Anyway, after 30 minutes of gambling, we went back with no winnings nor losses. Complete waste of time. We went shopping around Sky City after that, and bought a shoe stain and water repellent from No. 1 shoes.

We headed to the Asian supermarket to stock up on groceries next. We were planning to cook instant noodles and chicken with potatoes again, this time for our current host family. The supermarket was recommended by Donna (our hostess), and it was huge. Much bigger than all the others we have been to. And guess what? K found the exact same old town white coffee he drinks in Singapore at the supermarket. And i found 3 in 1 milo fuze!! Can u believe it? I thought 3 in 1 milo was non existent in NZ! And no surprise, the milo was imported from Singapore. But I didn't buy it cause i still had one whole tin of milo left to finish.

After the supermarket, we went to Sylvia Park and had dinner there. Chinese mixed dishes in one microwave box for $6. That settled dinner for 2 of us. Cheap eh! Then we went to Warehouse to get a DVD for Tony. "Journey to the center of the earth" starring Brendon Fraser. Apparently, the movie has 3D effects and the DVD came with 4 pairs of 3D glasses. Cool.. We headed to Pak and Save next for more grocery shopping. Bought chicken drumsticks, soft drinks and potatoes.

By the time we reached home, it was around 8pm. It was really dark, but luckily K had already familiarized himself with the roads so we didn't get lost at all. We watched the movie "Valkyrie" (starring Tom Cruise) with the rest of the family in the living room, then headed to bed around 11pm, with K all excited about the Air Soft war games the next day!! = )
